The character has received considerable attention due to her sex appeal as well as for being one of the first major female villains in video games.
The immortal Dark Queen is the ultimate enemy to the Battletoads , as she attempts to eliminate the 'Toads and Professor T.
Bird in order to stop them from hindering her plans to rule the universe. Even though her height is stated to be 6 feet cm tall on her profile screen in the arcade game which would mean she is actually smaller than the Battletoads , she normally appears to be of a tremendous size in the games, usually roughly four times the height of the 'Toads.
Her shifting size may however be an effect of her magic. Throughout the series she usually appears to taunt the 'Toads during the cutscenes; despite her royal stature, she prefers to be no more cultured than the Battletoads themselves, due to the crude nature of her speech which consists primarily of surfer slang and offensive puns such as calling them "cattle-loads" and "wartfeatures".
She leads a renegade army consisting primarily of anthropomorphic pigs and rats is usually fought as the end boss of the game.
Battletoads user manual. The Dark Queen is introduced in the first Battletoads game. In it, following her defeat by the Galactic Corporation at the Battle of Canis Major , she and her remaining forces have escaped to hide in the planet Ragnarok's World "in dark spaces between the stars.
Bird and the Battletoads Rash, Zitz and Pimple are escorting the Princess Angelica, daughter of the Terran Emperor, the Dark Queen disguised as a belly dancer suddenly strikes and kidnaps the Princess along with Pimple or Rash and Pimple in the Game Boy version , taking them away in the enormous spaceship Gargantua to the planet Armagedda Ragnarok's World.
During the final boss fight, she only has one special move besides basic kicks, spinning until turning into a tornado and then attempting to hit the player how much damage is done to the player is based on how fast she is spinning.
After her defeat, the Dark Queen flees into space, "retreating into the shadowy margins of the galaxy to recoup her losses. In Battletoads in Battlemaniacs , the returning Dark Queen has partnered with the vengeful computer engineer Silas Volkmire to kidnap Zitz and Michiko Tashoku, the daughter of the President of the Psicone Corporation, creators of the computer-generated portal Gamescape, intending to transform the entire world into Gamescape Kingdom over which they would rule together.
The other two 'Toads showdown with the Dark Queen again, this time at her Dark Tower, During the boss fight, she teleports and attacks the players with magical projectiles from staff.
After her defeat, she flees again "to the outer reaches of the Universe," vowing revenge. Together, they use a mysterious energy beam from outer space to render Earth's military might powerless and use a giant spaceship called the Colossus to take over the Earth.
Jun 17, Lynette rated it it was ok Shelves: books-i-haven-t-finished. I expected this book to be very pro-women and pro-feminism.
However, when in the first few chapters your main female protagonist is forcibly kissed by her suitor whom she claims she doesn't want pursuing her and she's gasping and whatever, then that reads more like a bodice-ripper than pro-women.
Because clearly, she just doesn't know how amazing men are and has to be shown how much she wants love.
I couldn't continue. Aug 02, Annika Paxman rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this book! However, here is my disclaimer readers beware Jan 31, Cheap and Lazy rated it it was amazing Shelves: romance , regency-ish , not-standalone , magic , dark.
Nice, long historical romance with a bit of magic. I enjoyed the authors writing style, though her imagination is what impressed me.
The dialog inner and outer occasionally wanders into anachronistic. But thats a small niggle in a great romance with enough non-romance plot to satisfy me and Im fussy about that.
The cast is fairly large, the premise somewhat complex, and the story took several dark turns which I did not enjoy as they were vivid and heartbreaking compared to most Nice, long historical romance with a bit of magic.
The cast is fairly large, the premise somewhat complex, and the story took several dark turns which I did not enjoy as they were vivid and heartbreaking compared to most romances--where this book ought to be shelved.
Anyway, as to the characters, Renard is an excellent hero, larger than life, sexy, powerful, insistent, but with remarkable gentleness and humor.
Ariane is a believable heroine in her circumstances: vulnerable, fallible, confused. She gains strength as she is tested throughout the book.
The personalities of her two sisters, Gabriella and Miriam, come through just as clearly, as do other key characters, including the Dark Queen.
I expect to read more about everyone in the following books of the series. Aug 26, Margaret rated it it was ok. I have very mixed reactions to this book.
On the positive side, I did basically like and could mostly relate to the main character, Ariane.
She's grieving, has two sisters depending on her, and she deeply feels her responsibilities. I even, for the most part, liked the hero and the setting I do enjoy historical settings with a bit of fantasy mixed in, at least a lot of the time.
That said, even when I could understand the reasons some of the characters did things they did, and most of the time I have very mixed reactions to this book.
I'd get sufficiently irritated that it would take me out of the story. I did finish the book, although I was tempted not to, because I liked the characters enough to want to know what happened.
I don't know if I will read any of the other books in the series or not. I might try the second one, at least, because I did like Gabrielle as a character.
But I think I'll give myself a break from this series and read a few other things first. Mar 06, Meredith rated it it was ok. I actually found this book at the 99 cent store, so that kind of says a little something about the quality overall.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really finish the book because the chapter I ended off on was really just filler and I got bored quickly. It was an alright book in my opinion but it crammed way more romance in than I was initially expecting, most of it being either forced, predictable or unhealthy.
I also feel like some of the smut parts were just there for shock factor and served no I actually found this book at the 99 cent store, so that kind of says a little something about the quality overall.
I also feel like some of the smut parts were just there for shock factor and served no purpose towards development or the plot as a whole.
I think the only thing that kept me invested for the most part, anyway was the fantastical element. Other than that the writing wasn't the best and from what I've heard the book isn't very historically accurate I can't really give my opinion on this matter since I know virtually nothing about Renaissance France.
Heck, I didn't even know Catherine de' Medici was a real person until I read some of the reviews!
Overall I'd just give a solid two stars since I liked the book just a smidge, but not enough to bump it up to a three. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

It started well enough but very quickly dissolved into such saccharine dribble that I struggled to complete the novel. How unsurprising to find that this author, despite arguing throughout that a woman does not need a man to complete her, resolves her novel with the woman needing the man.
Add in some sloppy editing a character is riding both a mare and a gelding in the same 1. Aug 06, Gretchen rated it really liked it. I love the idea of this society of "the Daughters of the Earth".
I could not put this book down I am now heavily invested in the Cheney family - I immediately ordered the next 2 books and want to hear of their future and the adventures of more Daughters of the Earth.
Feb 06, Jenny rated it really liked it Shelves: series , historical-fiction , romance. I bought this at a library sale thinking it was historical fiction.
There is some history, some fantasy and some romance. I enjoyed it very much and will be looking into the other two books in the series. May 13, melanie added it Shelves: historical , romance , fantasy , dnf.
Aug 15, Lori Winslow rated it really liked it. I enjoy reading about healing witches and not evil witch battles, and since this was mostly good witch stuff, I liked this book.
I picked this book up because of the Catherine deMedici inclusion, but I enjoyed the story itself so much, I look forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
Jun 23, ReneeW rated it really liked it Shelves: historical-renaissance. Jan 21, Lynn Pohlman rated it liked it Shelves: books-read , carroll-susan.
Interesting historical romance set during The Dark Queen's reign in France. Romance amidst dark magic and witch hunters. A good weekend read.

Books by Susan Carroll. The Dark Queen of Krynn is similar to its predecessors in terms of gameplay, though graphics were improved, as the PC and Macintosh version of the game could now display colors.
The Amiga version still uses 16 colors. A departure from many of the prior titles including the Forgotten Realms games is that the choice of the character's combat icon is restricted.
Instead of choosing parts and colors, a player has some pre-drawn icons which can be selected. Unlike its predecessors, the arrow keys can not be used to select menu options.
Those options are selected using hotkeys or clicking on the menu option with the mouse. Playability suffers from a couple of insidious bugs, poor design, and a great deal of gratuitous damage".
She concluded that it was "the nadir of the gold box games Only for the dedicated Gold Box fan". Login Forgot your password? Email Send Have an account?
